#1 - Make it Mini
There is nothing cuter than a miniature version of something. Presentation is a huge aspect of this. A great perk to this is that it can help make stunning hors d'oeuvres that can be eaten in just one bite and without any utensils. For example: try a shot glass of soup or mini pancakes on a toothpick.
#2 - Upscale Your Comfort Foods
A huge trend being seen right now is creating upscale comfort foods like mac and cheese. By adding rich ingredients like lobster, and having attention to detail in regards to presentation, you can take an ordinary home-style meal and turn it into restaurant quality. They do this all the time on Masterchef.
#3 - Provide Healthy Options
With the latest craze of everyone being cautious about what they eat, you may want to consider adding healthier options to your menu. Whether you are following the craze or not, many of your guests may be eating paleo, gluten free, or may just want to watch their weight. Follow along with the health kick craze and have some healthy options - it will leave you feeling better for your honeymoon on the beach.
#4 - Let Your Guests DIY
This trend is definitely a fun one. Allowing your guests to make their food themselves allows them to include only what they want, and can also make it fun too! Some examples are: ice-cream bar, make your own poutine station, waffle bar and a s'mores bar.
#5 - Reinvent Alcoholic Drinks
By reinvent, I mean try some classy Jello shots. I am not talking about the ones you drank out of little plastic cups in college. I am talking about stunning, decorated and elegantly presented Jello shots. This may be something you have to negotiate with the caterer and venue, but having them passed around on a platter is definitely a thing of the future. Check out Jelly Shot Test Kitchen's blog for some great recipes with pictures that show how Jello shots can really be elegant.
#6 - Bring Out the Late Night Snacks
As your guests stay later, dance like crazy and continue to drink for hours, they need to have another round of food. There is nothing better than a late night buffet to satisfy their needs. You can make this as formal or fun as you want. Most venues will offer different options. Traditional, which is usually made of crackers, cheese and veggies, or more laid back, which is made up of more bar-like food (wings, pizza, nachos, etc). This new trend is definitely around to stay!
