1. Lace
Lace wedding dresses are classic, feminine and romantic. Lace has intricate details and is best in an ivory or cream colour.
Pros: does not wrinkle after it has been pressed and can be easily cleaned
Cons: does not age well if it is not properly taken care of.
2. Satin
Satin is a popular choice when it comes to wedding dresses. It is shiny and sleek. Satin is very similar to silk. Satin is the man-made version of silk, and thus less expensive. Satin holds shape easily since it is a heavier fabric.
Pros: easy to clean (unlike silk), inexpensive, beautiful shiny look
Cons: can snag and wrinkle easily (silk wrinkles easily as well)
3. Tulle
Tulle is a light-weight, net-like fabric that is used in veils and underneath skirts. However, it can also be used to create a full ball-gown like in the photo below.
Pros: inexpensive, light-weight, does not wrinkle easily
Cons: delicate, does not age well, can easily catch lint off the floor
4. Organza
Similar to tulle, it is a light-weight and sheer fabric. However, it gives more shape to the dress than tulle does. Like in the photo below, it is best used in layers and create a fun, playful shape.
Pros: elegant, easy to clean
Cons: expensive, wrinkles easily, delicate
5. Chiffon
Chiffon is extremely light-weight and flows over the body. It is great in the summer because it is breathable and keeps you from overheating and sweating excessively like you might in a satin dress. It is often laid over a slip because it is sheer and transparent.
Pros: light and breathable, easy to clean, available in many colours
Cons: can scar when altered, can lack shape, frays easily
When considering fabrics, don't forget to consider the shape of the dress! Check out my post on how to choose the best dress for your body type!
